Linz AG switches cooling system to dry operation after Legionella outbreak

Linz AG has switched a cooling system linked to a cluster of Legionella infections to dry operation, ORF reported. The measure is intended to prevent any further possible formation of Legionella, the company said.

The system, located on the roof of the electricity network building in Linz, had tested positive for Legionella. It uses water sprayed from a basin onto pipes and lines to cool them. The system was cleaned and disinfected, and all the water was replaced before it was taken out of operation.

Linz AG said the cooling system was not needed because of the current temperatures. Final test results on the measures have not yet been released.

No new Legionella cases were reported in Upper Austria on Monday. A second possible source of infection has meanwhile been identified in Linz’s industrial district.
