Technical failure likely caused fatal A2 truck crash

Tuesday 3rd November 2026 on 14:01 in Austria

A2, Lower Austria, road accident

A technical failure is believed to have caused a crash involving two trucks on the A2 motorway near Zöbern on Monday, killing a 63-year-old driver from the Amstetten district, ORF reported.

The crash happened at about 10:55 a.m. in a two-lane roadworks section with no hard shoulder. A truck driver from Burgenland had stopped because of a technical fault, and the 63-year-old’s truck struck it from behind, police said Tuesday.

The impact trapped the 63-year-old in his cab, and firefighters freed him. He died from his injuries. The 47-year-old driver of the stopped truck was injured and flown to Wiener Neustadt University Hospital by Christophorus 3.

The A2 towards Vienna remained closed until 12:30 a.m. Tuesday while crews cleared the scene. A local diversion was in place, but traffic backed up for several kilometres.
