Tirol has recorded no enrolments for its “specialist in vegetarian cuisine” apprenticeship since the programme was introduced in July 2025, ORF reports. The region has also had no apprenticeship positions offered in the field.

The Tyrol Economic Chamber said the lack of training companies in the region was one reason for the absence of enrolments.

David Narr, the chamber’s apprenticeship representative in Tirol, said demand would be regulated by the market. If more purely vegetarian restaurants opened and became more popular, the need for qualified staff would increase, followed by greater interest in the training programme.

Interest remains limited across Austria, the Economic Chamber said. There are individual apprentices in Styria, Vienna and Carinthia, but the overall number of people interested remains low. Despite the growing trend towards vegetarian food, there are still too few training positions and insufficient demand for the profession.
