Hot weather is hurting cinemas in Vorarlberg, ORF reports, with sunny days keeping residents away despite air conditioning intended to offer relief from the heat.
Michael Wieser, a spokesperson for Vorarlberg cinemas, said there had been only one and a half rainy days since the school holidays began. Those were the only days when cinema tickets sold out, and cinemas generated eight times as much revenue as they did on sunny days.
Children’s films have been particularly affected in the afternoons. Although new Paw Patrol, Minions and Toy Story films are currently being shown, audiences are not taking up the offer. Adult films such as Odyssey and Spider Man are also attracting relatively few viewers.
“The films are there, but the rainy weather is missing,” Wieser said. He is now hoping for rain, although he offered little optimism and said he would perform rain dances if he could.
