Tandem paraglider crashes shortly after takeoff in Styria

A motorised tandem paraglider crashed shortly after takeoff in Michaelerberg-Pruggern in the Liezen district on Thursday, injuring both the pilot and his passenger, ORF reported.

The accident happened at about 11 a.m. near a launch and landing site for paragliders. The aircraft lifted off during the takeoff procedure but fell back to the ground for an unknown reason and tipped onto its side.

The 37-year-old passenger from Germany suffered serious injuries. After receiving initial treatment, she was flown by the C14 rescue helicopter to DKH Schladming hospital.

The 69-year-old pilot from the Liezen district sustained minor injuries. Investigators are examining the cause of the crash.
