EU backs cross-border transit network between Salzburg and Bavaria

The European Union will provide around 750,000 euros for a cross-border public transport network linking Salzburg with Bavaria’s Berchtesgadener Land region, ORF reported Tuesday.

The project aims to introduce unified fares, improve connections and provide better passenger information between the neighbouring regions, which are closely linked geographically, economically and socially.

The funding from the European Regional Development Fund will be used mainly to complete the fare structure and establish the necessary organisational framework.

The launch has been delayed by almost a year because of the project’s technical and organisational complexity. The network was originally scheduled to begin operating by early 2027, but officials on both sides of the border now expect it to start in the fourth quarter of 2027, at the earliest in October.
