Police have identified a pensioner from the Völkermarkt district as the suspected driver in a fatal hit-and-run in Traundorf, ORF reported. A 20-year-old man died in the crash on August 9.
The man had been driving a Mercedes Sprinter belonging to a voluntary fire brigade in the district. Investigators checked the vehicle again on August 24, although it initially appeared to have no damage.
Forensic officers found tissue on the underside of the vehicle. Police said Tuesday that it was almost certainly human tissue and that the traces were being examined.
The suspected driver initially denied involvement but later admitted that he had driven over an unconscious person lying in the middle of the road. He told investigators that he was in shock and continued driving. He later returned to the scene and helped secure the accident.
Investigators and experts, including a forensic pathologist and a traffic expert, are still determining whether other vehicles were involved. Police said no final conclusion about the course of the accident can yet be made.
