Tyrol directly authorises wolf shooting after sheep deaths

Tyrol has simplified the bureaucracy surrounding wolf shootings after four sheep were found dead near Nauders, ORF reported. The responsible authority directly authorised the shooting of one wolf for the first time.

Hunters authorised to carry out the shooting were informed by SMS, the Tyrolean government said. Officials said they had reviewed the legal requirements based on the available information and an expert assessment.

The authority said the option has been available since the latest amendment to Tyrol’s Hunting Act. Previously, the state government issued formal orders authorising wolf shootings.

The four dead sheep were found in the municipality of Nauders over the past weekend. After an examination by the responsible local veterinary officer, there was concrete suspicion that a wolf had overcome the livestock protection fence and killed the sheep, the government said.
