The Prägraten mountain rescue team cleaned hundreds of stickers from the summit cross on the Großvenediger in the Lienz district, ORF reported.
Ten rescue team members climbed to the summit last week to remove the stickers, which had been placed there by numerous mountaineers in recent years. They also cleared large amounts of rubbish from the area around the cross. Two tonnes of material were flown down to the valley.
The rescue team appealed to climbers to stop defacing the cross with stickers. Many mountaineers consider placing one there a form of remembrance.
A rescue team spokesman said he hoped the freshly cleaned cross would now be treated with respect.
