Hiker dies after 100-metre fall near Königssee

A 76-year-old hiker died after falling 100 metres from the Rinnkendlsteig trail in Schönau am Königssee on Wednesday, ORF reported.

The accident happened at about 2.35pm. The man’s companions immediately called emergency services.

Berchtesgaden mountain rescue and the Christophorus 6 rescue helicopter responded, but the man could not be saved. His body was later recovered by helicopter.

The companions were also flown out of the difficult terrain. They were in shock and later received support from the mountain rescue service’s crisis intervention team.

Two alpine police officers from the Piding border police station took over the investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
