A 35-year-old German cyclist suffered severe head injuries in a crash in Westendorf on Wednesday and was taken to hospital by helicopter, ORF reported. He was not wearing a helmet.
The accident happened at about 6.35pm on the L204, known as Windauer Straße. The cyclist was travelling towards the centre of Westendorf when a 73-year-old driver attempted to overtake him.
For reasons that remain unclear, the cyclist was struck by the side of the car’s rear section and fell. He received initial emergency treatment from a doctor before being taken to hospital in St Johann.
The driver called emergency services and provided first aid. Both the bicycle and the car sustained minor damage.
