Klagenfurt indoor pool project remains on schedule

Construction of Klagenfurt’s new indoor pool is on schedule, with excavation due to begin in September and the facility expected to open in the first quarter of 2028, ORF reported.
The project on Klagenfurt’s Südring is currently focused on underground work. A 24 metre deep and 500 metre long concrete wall has been installed to seal the excavation and the future pool below ground. The wall has hardened, groundwater has been pumped out and measurements are being taken continuously.
Erwin Smolle, a board member of the Klagenfurt Stadtwerke municipal utility, said the work was proceeding according to plan. Preparations are also under way for a left-turn lane on the road. Once the excavation begins, construction of the three-storey building can start.
Total costs are estimated at 72 million euros, including 4.4 million euros for a new Olympic centre that will move from the Stadionsportpark to the indoor pool. Smolle said the project’s cost and schedule, including the planned 2028 opening, would be maintained.
The transport plan provides for cars to reach the pool from the eastern side of Südring and park there. A new bus route is also planned to run every 20 minutes for visitors, according to Sandra Wassermann, the city’s road construction councillor from the Freedom Party of Austria. The route will start at Hubertusstraße and end at Südring, with service possible via Heiligen-Geist-Platz or Klagenfurt’s main railway station.
Wassermann criticised what she described as a lack of oversight of the large project at city hall. She said she had to rely entirely on Stadtwerke and that the city council had not yet been informed about the current construction status this year.
Smolle rejected the criticism, saying that Stadtwerke provided extensive regular reports, held small steering committees and regularly briefed committees at city hall.
Entry prices for the new family and sports pool have not yet been set. Smolle said the total costs were now known and calculations could begin. The issue is expected to be resolved by the opening at the latest.
