Second girl leaves hospital after Schongau school attack

A 13-year-old girl seriously injured in the knife attack at Schongau’s Welfen-Gymnasium, an academic secondary school, has been discharged from hospital, BR reported. No victims are now receiving hospital treatment, about a month after the attack.

Another 13-year-old girl who was also seriously injured was discharged in July, the Munich General Prosecutor’s Office said.

The girl who has now left hospital suffered life-threatening stab wounds in the attack on July 8. Several classmates came to her aid, using T-shirts to make pressure dressings and stop the bleeding. They then fetched first-aid kits and sterile compresses, skills they had learned during first-aid training. The classmates probably saved her life.

Teachers and police officers overpowered the alleged attacker. Investigators secured a knife, as well as a pistol and ammunition. The 16-year-old is alleged to have fired one shot with the pistol before the weapon failed.

The suspect is in pretrial detention and is being investigated, among other charges, on suspicion of attempted murder. Investigators have found indications of an extremist motive, including a document that may have been written by the suspect. The Bavarian Central Office for the Prosecution of Extremism and Terrorism has therefore taken over the investigation.

The document, seen by the German Press Agency, contains insults directed at several religious communities and population groups. It also insults people from the author’s surroundings, including classmates and teachers.

Investigators are continuing to examine where the pistol came from. According to German Press Agency information, the 16-year-old Croatian said he had obtained the weapon on the dark web.
