Switzerland has authorised the release of up to 50,000 cubic metres of jet fuel from its mandatory reserves by the end of November to ease supply shortages at Zurich and Geneva airports, SRF reported.
The Federal Office for National Economic Supply said the shortfall was caused by restrictions at refineries in southern France and Germany, as well as rail disruptions. The two airports need reserve supplies despite low demand in November.
In October, authorities released an initial 30,000 cubic metres to secure supplies for Zurich Airport. The latest release brings the total drawn from jet fuel reserves to 17.4 per cent. The delegate for national economic supply can approve releases of up to 20 per cent without further authorisation.
Switzerland’s supply of petroleum products has been strained for months, mainly because of restrictions on Rhine shipping. Mandatory reserves have been used four times since September. Supplies of petrol and heating oil are currently secure but also remain tight, the office said.
