mountain rescue, Tirol, Zugspitze

Two young climbers were rescued after becoming stranded in deep snow during a night ascent of the Zugspitze, ORF reported. Both were uninjured.

The 21-year-old man and his 17-year-old companion, both from Germany, set out at 1.30 a.m. on All Saints’ Day to climb the Stopselzieher via ferrata for sunrise. At about 2,500 metres, poor weather and snow up to their knees left them in difficulty, and they became separated. The man headed downhill while the woman called for help.

Ehrwald mountain rescue teams descended from the Zugspitzbahn mountain railway’s upper station to reach the climbers. A police helicopter picked up the woman. After an initial examination, she was able to leave a clinic in Garmisch uninjured.
