Vorarlberg’s Chamber of Labour is warning residents about fake tradespeople offering services at unusually low prices, ORF reports. The providers call at homes or distribute flyers, and customers who agree to hire them may face poor work and greatly inflated bills.
The Chamber says complaints to its consumer protection service have increased. The tradespeople offer services such as cleaning driveways, facades and patios, as well as renovation work. They often show before-and-after photos and may use a supposed Vorarlberg business address or the state coat of arms to appear local. In many cases, the Chamber says, they do not have an Austrian trade licence.
Older people are particularly targeted, according to the Chamber. Consumer protection officer Renate Burtscher says residents should reject the offers and avoid paying deposits or money in advance. If workers have already started in order to pressure customers, she advises calling the police. Asking to see a trade licence may also prompt them to leave, she says.
