Unconscious driver found behind guardrail after A1 crash

An unconscious 34-year-old man was found beside the A1 motorway after a rear-end collision near St. Florian in the Linz-Land district, ORF reported. How he ended up behind the guardrail remains unclear.

The man, from the Wels-Land district, was driving towards Vienna shortly after 1 a.m. on Friday when he collided with a van in the second of the motorway’s three lanes. Police said he may have seen the van too late or failed to see it.

The van spun for about 100 metres before stopping in the first lane. The man’s car also came to a stop with extensive damage.

Other drivers found him lying behind the guardrail rather than inside his vehicle. He was unresponsive and was taken to the UKH accident hospital in Linz after receiving emergency treatment from a doctor.

The 28-year-old van driver and his 24-year-old wife, both Syrian citizens from Dornbirn, were also injured and taken to the Kepler University Hospital in Linz.
