The Upper Austrian Court of Audit has found progress in implementing its recommendations for Linz Airport, but says more work is needed on the airport’s long-term strategy and possible future funding. Political parties reacted differently to the report, ORF reported Tuesday.
Of four points reviewed, one has been fully implemented and two are in progress, the court said. Coordination between the relevant departments of the state of Upper Austria was completed.
The court also gave a positive assessment of the state’s acquisition of shares in the airport and their subsequent resale. Talks with the Austrian Armed Forces on shared services, operating costs and a future runway renovation are under way.
Economy Minister Markus Achleitner of the Austrian People’s Party said the report confirmed that necessary decisions had already been made to secure the airport’s future.
The Freedom Party said the share acquisition was an important foundation for the airport’s successful continuation, while calling for the aviation tax to be abolished to maintain competitiveness.
The Social Democrats and the Greens welcomed initial progress but said the report lacked a long-term strategy and specific figures for future funding needs. The NEOS also criticised the absence of a clear strategic plan. The MFG party reiterated its call for the airport to be privatised quickly.
