Independent Zurich security director Mario Fehr will stand for re-election to the Zurich cantonal government on April 4, 2027, he announced on Friday, SRF reported.

Fehr, who has served on the seven-member government since 2011, is seeking a fourth term. He has led the security department throughout his time in office.

He was elected as a Social Democratic Party representative in 2011 but left the party 10 years later and has since served as an independent. In the 2023 election, he received the strongest result of all seven government members.

The 2027 election is expected to bring significant change, with four current members stepping down: Ernst Stocker of the Swiss People’s Party, Carmen Walker Späh of the Free Democratic Party, Silvia Steiner of The Centre and Jacqueline Fehr of the Social Democratic Party.

Health director Natalie Rickli of the Swiss People’s Party and construction director Martin Neukom of the Green Party are also seeking another term. Fehr will be 68 at the time of next April’s election.
