Passenger train evacuated from Martinswand Tunnel after technical failure

A passenger train was evacuated from the Martinswand Tunnel on the Karwendel railway line after a technical failure left it stranded overnight, ORF reported. All 11 people on board were brought out safely.

The train was travelling towards Innsbruck when it stopped at about 1.30 a.m. in the tunnel in the Martinswand above Zirl. Police said a technical defect in the railcar made it impossible for the train to continue.

Fifteen members of the Zirl fire brigade responded. The brigade had practised a similar rescue operation in the tunnel the previous year, helping the evacuation proceed smoothly. ÖBB towed away the defective train, and the railway line was reopened at about 6 a.m.
