Two-thirds of Burgenland passengers switch from cars to trains

Two out of three passengers in Burgenland now use trains for journeys they previously made by car, according to a survey by VCÖ, reported by ORF.

The most frequently cited reason for the change was the Klimaticket. More than half of respondents also said the cost of driving was too high. Other factors included being able to use travel time, a change of workplace and improved public transport connections.

VCÖ said cuts to rail services would have a negative impact on mobility. Scattered development and businesses located outside village centres can also make it difficult for people to switch to buses or trains.

Businesses should be located close to public transport, said VCÖ expert Michael Schwendinger. A total of 214 passengers from Burgenland took part in the 2026 VCÖ rail survey.
