ORF reported that a 75-year-old German holidaymaker died after falling about 60 metres during a hike in the Ötztal Alps municipality of St Leonhard im Pitztal on Friday.
The woman had set out with her family from the area around the Rüsselsheimer Hut in the Geigenkamm massif, intending to descend towards the valley. At about 9.40am, she apparently lost her footing while crossing a step in the ground. The wet conditions may have contributed to the accident, police said.
She went over the edge of the trail and fell down a roughly 35-degree, rocky slope, coming to rest on a hiking path below.
Her husband immediately alerted emergency services, while family members provided first aid. After being treated by an emergency doctor, the woman was recovered by cable and flown to the valley by rescue helicopter. Police said she died from her injuries despite the rapid medical response.
