Drivers urged to protect cars during hail, floods and storms

SRF has published advice for motorists after Friday’s storm damaged many vehicles, urging them to prioritise their safety and avoid flooded roads.

During severe weather, drivers should seek shelter in a car park or rest area and secure loose parts if it can be done safely. Police should be informed if necessary, for example when trees have fallen or roads are flooded.

In flood conditions, drivers should never start the engine. Instead, they should have the vehicle towed to avoid costly engine damage caused by water entering the car.

After the storm, motorists should photograph or film any damage and record the location, date and time. They should report the damage to their insurer promptly online, including the photos and videos.

A police report should be filed if the insurer requires one. Drivers should not arrange repairs before the insurer has inspected the vehicle.

If the car is no longer roadworthy, motorists should contact their insurer by phone and arrange a towing service. The insurer should have the vehicle taken to the nearest garage.

SRF stressed that motorists should never put themselves in danger to protect their vehicle during a storm, hail or flooding.
