Severe thunderstorms with strong winds and hail led to 25 fire service callouts in Carinthia on Monday evening and overnight into Tuesday, ORF reported. The Metnitz Valley was the worst affected.
In Grades, 64 litres of rain fell per square metre, flooding basements. Strong winds also damaged several roofs, while firefighters responded to fallen trees blocking roads.
Johannes Ebner, commander of the Metnitz volunteer fire brigade, said the storm front arrived very quickly with strong winds and hail. He said the storm was fortunately concentrated in one area, otherwise the damage would have been worse. Several roofs were damaged or destroyed, and some areas remained without electricity and inaccessible because wood was lying on the roads.
