Police issued hundreds of citations during a traffic operation in the Murtal district of Styria on Tuesday, ORF reported. Most were for speeding, but officers also found serious vehicle defects and violations of tax and employment laws.

Police, labour inspectors and financial police checked 120 vehicles along the Friesacher Straße (B317) near St. Peter ob Judenburg. The operation resulted in more than 100 citations under the Motor Vehicle Act, more than 300 speeding violations and several number-plate removals.

Radar equipment recorded 318 speeding offences. One driver lost his licence because of heavy intoxication, and two others were driving without the required authorisation.

Inspections found defects including barely functioning brakes, leaking brake lines, broken vehicle frames, heavy oil leaks and tyres with almost no tread. Police removed 10 sets of number plates because the vehicles posed an immediate danger.

Police also found repeated breaches of driving and rest-time rules. Financial police inspected almost 50 businesses and found, among other things, unpaid tax debts. Authorities also reported violations of wage and social laws, trade regulations and the law on employing foreign nationals.
