Vorarlberg was Austria’s driest state in September, with rainfall about 70 percent below the long-term average, according to ORF, citing a monthly assessment by GeoSphere Austria. The month was also unusually warm and sunny.
Warth recorded just 33 litres of rain per square metre for the whole month. For comparison, a moderate to heavy downpour can bring up to 35 litres per square metre in six hours.
The dry weather brought unusually long sunshine hours. Rohrspitz, a lowland location, recorded nearly 250 hours of sunshine, the most of any lowland location in Austria. At the same time, Lake Constance’s water level stood at 256 centimetres on September 30, the lowest recorded for that date.
Temperatures averaged 2.7 degrees Celsius above the 1991 to 2020 climate average. Bludenz reached 33.5 degrees in early September, the highest temperature recorded there in September, according to GeoSphere Austria.
