A 63-year-old diver has been missing in Lake Starnberg since Saturday morning, BR reported. Emergency teams are searching for him with helicopters and drones.
Police said the man was diving with two companions at the Allmannshauser Steilwand, an underwater cliff on the lake’s eastern shore. He was no longer seen after about 30 minutes.
The search involves the water rescue service, a rescue helicopter, a police helicopter and drones. It had produced no result by Saturday evening.
Popular diving area with extreme depths
The Allmannshauser Steilwand is known beyond the region as a diving area. Thousands of divers visit it each year, including to watch fish in its rock crevices.
The underwater wall extends more than 70 metres into the depths and reaches 85 metres at one point. Diving with standard compressed-air tanks is permitted to a maximum depth of 40 metres.
The Allmannshauser Steilwand is considered challenging and is not suitable for beginners. Fatal diving accidents have occurred there repeatedly in the past.
