Innsbruck city bike scheme wins Austrian mobility award

Innsbruck’s Stadtrad bike-sharing scheme has won the Sharing category at the 35th VCÖ Mobility Award Austria, ORF reported. The award was presented on Thursday evening at Vienna’s Odeon Theatre by Transport Minister Peter Hanke, the Austrian Transport Club and Austrian Federal Railways.
Introduced in 2014, Stadtrad has increased annual rentals elevenfold from 100,000 to 1.12 million. The scheme now has 55 stations and 615 bicycles.
The Austrian Transport Club attributed the scheme’s success partly to cooperation with businesses. Its managing director, Ulla Rasmussen, said rental bicycles were an ideal complement to public transport and improved mobility for both Innsbruck residents and commuters.
This year’s competition for environmentally friendly mobility and sustainable freight transport received 388 entries. Hanke presented awards to 13 projects on Thursday evening.
The overall prize went to Schachinger Logistik from Upper Austria for replacing diesel vehicles with electric trucks and achieving an energy self-sufficient power supply through photovoltaic systems and a battery storage system.
