Switzerland’s rail passengers travel record 24 billion kilometres in 2025

People in Switzerland travelled farther by train in 2025 than ever before, SRF reported, with passengers collectively covering nearly 24 billion passenger kilometres.

The figure was the third consecutive record high, according to the Swiss government. Compared with 2024, rail transport performance increased by 3 per cent.

The latest public transport statistics show that rail travel has continued its growth since the sharp decline during the coronavirus pandemic.

What the statistics include

The statistics cover transport and infrastructure companies operating in Switzerland. In addition to railways, they include mountain railways, trams, trolleybuses, buses, funiculars, cable cars, public passenger shipping and car ferries.

Passenger kilometre data for these other forms of transport are not fully available. Most of the statistics come from online surveys of transport companies. The data is collected at company level and is partly supplemented by information on individual infrastructure facilities.

Purely museum railways, tourist airport transfers and cross-border long-distance bus services are not included.
