Erwin Url is to be ordained a deacon at Graz Cathedral on Sunday as he begins his path towards the priesthood, ORF reported. The Styria ceremony will be led by diocesan bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl.

Url, from eastern Styria, pursued several careers before deciding to become a priest. After compulsory schooling, he trained as a painter, completed his master craftsman examination and later founded his own painting business.

A workplace accident disrupted those plans, prompting him to retrain as an accountant and balance sheet accountant. During his search for work, Url said he became certain that something essential was missing from his life. He found it while studying theology and developed the desire to become a priest.

After completing his studies, Url spent a year as a trainee in Stainz and Bad Gams in western Styria. He currently works in hospital and prison chaplaincy. His priestly ordination is planned for next year.

The role of a deacon

The Catholic Church distinguishes between permanent deacons, who may also be married, and unmarried deacons who later go on to become priests. Deacons proclaim the word of God, assist during Mass, may administer baptisms and lead funeral services.
