Burgenland plans law to expand camping options

Burgenland’s government plans to make camping easier and more attractive from next year under a new camping law, ORF reported. The law is expected to take effect on January 1, subject to the ongoing consultation process.

More than one in five overnight stays in Burgenland during the summer now takes place at campsites. The proposed legislation would provide more flexibility and reduce bureaucracy for newer forms of camping, including glamping in luxuriously equipped tents or small cabins, as well as holidays in mobile homes.

Mobile homes for short-term guests could account for up to 35 percent of a campsite’s pitch area under the new rules.

The law would also enable micro-camping on small areas at agricultural businesses, such as wineries. These sites could offer up to five pitches for a maximum of 10 people, with stays limited to one week.

Burgenland Tourism chief Didi Tunkel said micro-camping offered significant opportunities because the region’s strengths in wine and cuisine, nature, cycling and hiking could be combined with camping.
