Salzburg records 22 livestock deaths and five confirmed wolves

Salzburg recorded five confirmed wolves and 22 livestock deaths by the end of August, ORF reported, while livestock attacks declined compared with the previous year. The state says it has invested in herd protection and preventive measures.

Salzburg has invested about 1.5 million euros in herd protection since 2018. It paid out about 357,000 euros for preventive measures against wolf attacks last year and a further 168,000 euros by the end of July 2026.

Eligible measures include fences, nets for night pens, electric pulse devices and GPS collar transmitters. According to the state, nearly half of sheep and goat keepers in Salzburg have already introduced preventive protection measures.

By August 30, wolves had killed 22 livestock animals: 12 goats, six sheep and four calves. Three more animals were injured and four are missing. A roe deer buck was also documented as a wolf kill.

Marlene Svazek, the deputy governor of Salzburg and the state’s hunting official, said the figures showed that herd protection alone was not sufficient to address the wolf issue. She continues to support wolf management that also allows wolves to be removed.

The state plans to continue its current approach of herd protection, advice and preventive measures. No additional funding or organisational measures are currently planned.
