82-year-old woman dies after Legionella infection in Amstetten

An 82-year-old woman treated for a Legionella infection at Amstetten State Hospital has died, ORF reported. The district authority confirmed the death and said the source of the infection remains under investigation.

The case became known last week. Investigators have largely completed their inquiries, but no results are available yet.

The district authority said it currently considers it highly likely that the woman became infected inside her apartment. She lived in a housing unit within an assisted-living facility. The other units were examined, with no abnormalities found.

The death was first reported by the Niederösterreichische Nachrichten newspaper.

No other Legionella infections are currently known in the Amstetten district, according to the district authority. The case drew attention after an outbreak was also reported in the greater Linz area.

Lower Austria has recorded 38 Legionella cases so far this year. The province reported 74 cases in 2025 and 63 in 2024.
