A 47-year-old Swiss road cyclist was seriously injured after a car struck his rear wheel near Pettnau in Innsbruck-Land district on Saturday evening and drove away, ORF reported.

The cyclist was travelling on the Tyrolean Road, or B171, at about 9.40pm. He was keeping a considerable distance from a 38-year-old colleague riding ahead of him when a car approached from behind and touched his rear wheel for reasons that remain unclear.

The cyclist fell and suffered serious injuries. An emergency doctor and ambulance crew treated him before he was taken to the trauma room at Innsbruck Clinic. Police said he had been wearing a helmet and that his bicycle had been lit.

The driver continued without stopping. Police believe the vehicle was a silver-grey car, probably a Kia Ceed, and are asking witnesses to contact Telfs police station on 059133/7126100.
