Emergency crews simulate fire on Salzburg local train

Firefighters, paramedics and police took part in a large-scale emergency exercise at Salzburg Central Station on Thursday evening, ORF reported. The drill simulated a fire on a local railway train arriving at the station, with 18 passengers needing rescue.

About 80 emergency personnel participated, including members of the professional and volunteer fire services and the Red Cross. The exercise focused on coordination between the organisations.

Florian Schubert, deputy director of the fire service, said crews were experienced in working together during large-scale incidents. He said the exercise was particularly important for younger firefighters and Red Cross personnel, who could gain practical experience for future operations.

Train services at the station continued as scheduled. Around 10 fire engines and seven Red Cross vehicles made the area around the station busier than usual, while police also supported the exercise. Trolleybuses, regional buses and other public transport services were not affected.

Exercises of this size are held in Salzburg about once a year.
