A dead swan found in the Enns Canal in St. Pantaleon-Erla, in Amstetten district, has tested positive for bird flu, ORF reported. Authorities are investigating a second suspected case involving another dead swan found in the canal.

State veterinary director Christina Riedl said cases of bird flu in dead wild birds are normal at this time of year and she expects more. The Agency for Health and Food Safety is examining the suspected case. Authorities are monitoring the situation and are in contact with the Health Ministry. A bird flu task force is due to meet in two weeks.

Riedl said there is currently no danger to people or animals, but advised caution. Anyone who finds a dead wild bird should not touch it without protection and must notify the district authority, as bird flu is a notifiable disease.

The Chamber of Agriculture has informed poultry keepers and urged them to strengthen biosecurity measures, including hygiene and protective clothing, to prevent the virus from entering their poultry houses.
