A 54-year-old driver died after suffering a medical emergency that caused a head-on collision in Spittal an der Drau on Tuesday, ORF reported. Police said his death was not related to the crash.
The man was driving west on the B100 Villacher Straße in the town at about 7.20 a.m., with a 51-year-old passenger beside him. He suddenly slumped over, police said, and his car crossed into the oncoming lane, colliding head-on with a car driven by a 48-year-old woman.
Emergency responders began resuscitation after recognising the driver’s medical emergency. He was flown by C11 rescue helicopter to Klagenfurt Hospital, where he later died in the shock room.
The passenger was uninjured. The woman driving the other car was taken to Spittal an der Drau Hospital with injuries of undetermined severity.
