Ebnat-Kappel’s only ski lift will be dismantled after snow shortages and financial problems brought its operation to an end, SRF reported.

The operator decided last Saturday to take down the Tanzboden lift, ending skiing in Ebnat-Kappel. It opened in December 1965 and served as a popular winter destination for decades.

World Cup races were held on the Girlenhang ski slope in the 1970s. Heini Hemmi competed there several times, and he and his brother Christian finished first and second in a giant slalom in January 1977. Bernhard Russi also took part in a giant slalom in 1972.

Snow reliability had long been a concern: the slope was already being covered with artificial snow in the 1960s. The lift’s upper station is just under 1,200 metres above sea level.
