A court in Innsbruck sentenced a 36-year-old man to five years in prison on Monday for years of violence against his wife, ORF reported. The court found that he had abused and raped the 35-year-old and threatened to kill her. The verdict is not final.

The accusations dated back about 15 years. Prosecutors said the man had beaten his wife several times a week and threatened to take their son from her and kill her if she contacted police.

An anonymous tip from within the family triggered the investigation. Police found the woman intimidated when they checked on her, and she later described the years of abuse to officers, the court heard.

The prosecutor said the couple’s marriage had been arranged and that they were cousins. Several relatives declined to testify against a close family member. The woman’s sister did testify, and the court found both her account and the woman’s recorded testimony credible.
