Munich nightclub the Sweet Club has closed after nearly a decade, with its final party held over Halloween weekend. BR reports that the club announced on Instagram last Friday that the weekend’s event would be its last.
The closure follows the termination of the club’s lease after it fell behind on rent, operator Mathias Scheffel told the newspaper tz. He said hot weather over the summer kept visitor numbers low at the basement club, leaving it unable to pay two months’ rent. Attempts to negotiate with the landlord failed.
The venue at Maximiliansplatz covered more than 1,000 square metres and described itself as the largest nightclub in central Munich. It hosted nights featuring house, R&B and chart music. Scheffel said the club paid 20,000 euros in rent during better times, but that younger people now went out less than they used to. He believed business would have picked up again in winter, but the landlord considered that uncertain.
The club’s closure adds to a wider decline in Bavarian nightlife. Federal Statistical Office figures show the number of discos and dance venues in Bavaria fell from 382 in 2014 to 236 in 2024.
