A2 motorway, Lower Austria, road crash

One person was killed and another lightly injured when two trucks crashed on the A2 Southern Motorway near Zöbern in Neunkirchen district on Monday, ORF reported. The collision caused a traffic jam several kilometres long.

The crash happened at about 11 a.m. One truck is believed to have run into the back of the other, Philipp Gutlederer of emergency service Notruf Niederösterreich said. One driver was trapped. The Lower Austria Red Cross said one person had died. The injured person was flown to hospital by the Christophorus 3 emergency helicopter.

The Vienna-bound carriageway was closed. Vehicles already close to the crash were being allowed through, but the closure remained in place early in the afternoon. A diversion was set up.

ASFINAG said the closure could last several more hours because one of the trucks had spilled a large quantity of animal feed. ORF’s traffic desk advised drivers to leave the motorway at Pinggau and use the B54.

The ÖAMTC motoring organisation said emergency crews had difficulty getting through the traffic and urged drivers to form an emergency corridor as soon as congestion begins.
