Green Party president Lisa Mazzone will run for Geneva’s seat in the Council of States in 2027 and will also stand for the National Council, Swiss broadcaster SRF reported. Mazzone, 38, announced her plans in an interview with Tamedia. She lost her seat in 2023.

Mazzone said the lack of women in Geneva’s Council of States was one reason for her renewed bid. “Half the population is not represented today: women,” she said. She also wants to help address major challenges in parliament, saying the climate crisis is already here, including in Switzerland.

She said her party’s current opposition stance would not prevent her from serving again in the Council of States, adding that she had shown during her previous term that she could reach compromises with other parties. She also said progressive forces needed to be clear about the values they stood for.

Mazzone reiterated the Greens’ claim to a seat in the Federal Council, Switzerland’s executive government. She said the government needed a party that made climate a top priority and saw an opportunity to achieve that with the Social Democrats.
