A trailer carrying about 700 chickens overturned after a lorry left the B154 Mondseestraße in Zell am Moos, Upper Austria, early Thursday, ORF reported. More than 60 firefighters helped rescue the animals.
The crash happened at about 2:51 a.m., shortly after the lorry passed the Zell am Moos fire station. The vehicle was carrying 1,400 live chickens in total. Transport crates fell onto the road and into a roadside ditch, and some birds escaped briefly before being caught again.
Fire crews called in additional support shortly after the operation began. The Guggenberg fire brigade helped secure the trailer and remove chickens from their crates. The rescue took several hours, and another lorry was arranged to transport the recovered birds.
The driver was unhurt, and the road had reopened by the morning commute.
