A careers event at Heldenplatz in Vienna is giving students an overview of training and apprenticeship options, with a particular focus on young people who do not hold Austrian citizenship, ORF reported.

The Career Platform at Heldenplatz is being held on Wednesday ahead of Austria’s National Day and the armed forces’ public showcase. Students from the seventh grade upwards can meet employers and trainers. School classes had to register in advance.

The Austrian Integration Fund, which is organising the event with the Defence Ministry, the City of Vienna and the Vienna Education Directorate, says young people with foreign citizenship are underrepresented in apprenticeships.

Training options on display range from motor vehicle mechanics to administrative assistants and cooks. Participating organisations and companies include the armed forces, Austrian Federal Railways, construction company PORR and the City of Vienna.

About 7,000 students attended last year. The programme also includes access to much of the armed forces’ showcase, with helicopter and tank visits, a military fitness course, a guided tour called “Denk:Mal Demokratie” and an interactive scavenger hunt.
