No reports have been filed in Vorarlberg over cigarette butts being thrown on children’s playgrounds since a nationwide ban took effect about six weeks ago, ORF Vorarlberg reported. Offenders face a fine of 500 euros, rising to as much as 2,000 euros for repeat offences.

The lack of reports does not mean the ban is being followed everywhere. Cigarette butts are still turning up on playgrounds in Bludenz, according to the city. In Bregenz, the ban has been in force since August 20, the city administration said.

District authorities in Vorarlberg have received no reports related to the ban, the Bregenz district authority’s criminal affairs department told ORF. A Bludenz city spokesperson said cigarette butts remained widespread, adding that offenders would have to be caught in the act.

Municipalities must put up signs informing people about the ban. Bludenz has added notices to existing playground signs, while Bregenz already displays information about its littering ban at playgrounds and sports facilities. The police are responsible for enforcement: in Bludenz, checks take place during regular patrols, while Bregenz city police conduct spot checks.

Bregenz officials said it was too early to assess whether the nationwide ban would have an effect. The city will continue to monitor the situation with its municipal works department and gardening service and consider further measures if needed.

In the municipalities of Hohenems and Hard, smoking had already been banned on playgrounds for years.
