MedAustron, an ion therapy and research centre in Wiener Neustadt, plans to expand its patient care and research after treating about 3,700 people since opening in 2016, ORF reported. The centre marked 10 years since its first successful treatment of a patient with a brain tumour.

About 80 per cent of those treated at MedAustron are from Austria, while 20 per cent come from elsewhere in the world. Speakers at a ceremony on Friday said the potential of ion therapy had not yet been fully realised.

The centre plans to add a new building and develop a second, compact accelerator. Managing directors Eugen Hug and Alfred Zens said the projects would allow MedAustron to treat more patients, test new treatment approaches and strengthen its technological expertise.

Chancellor Christian Stocker called the centre an Austrian flagship project combining medical excellence, scientific capability and innovation. Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner said it offered treatment options available in only a few places worldwide, while research there aims to improve cancer treatment. Wiener Neustadt Mayor Klaus Schneeberger said the project had given thousands of cancer patients new hope.
