A Swiss initiative to allow solar installations without building permits failed after organisers did not submit the required 100,000 signatures within the 18-month collection period, SRF reported. The Federal Chancellery said the deadline expired on October 8, 2026.

The initiative, titled “For solar installations without permits,” sought a constitutional provision exempting solar panels on buildings and other structures from permit requirements, including in protected townscapes and landscapes. Exceptions would have applied to cultural monuments of national or cantonal importance and historic sites, where permits could have included conditions.

The organisers’ website said 117,500 people had signed. But checks in July and August found nearly 20,000 signatures invalid, initiative originator Roland Weiss told Keystone-SDA. He said a lawyer was investigating how so many signatures had been rejected despite the use of signature-collection companies.

The committee comprised seven private individuals from Aargau, Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn. Solar installations are often blocked by heritage preservation authorities or townscape commissions, SRF reported.
