Vienna plans to turn the former Opel plant in Aspern into an innovation and production district, but the transformation of the 48.5-hectare site is still years away, ORF reported.
The Stellantis-owned factory closed in 2024. The company must finish dismantling its operations before redevelopment can begin. The work is taking longer than expected, according to the Federal Real Estate Company, which said on Thursday it should be completed by the end of the year.
The 140,000-square-metre production hall, where car gearboxes were made, will be shut down. The city’s development commission set initial goals for the site in May, including a planned “Factory of the Future” focused on researching and producing new technologies. Potential areas include climate-neutral city solutions, digitalisation, smart production and health technologies.
The property owner’s subsidiary ARE Austrian Real Estate is coordinating with the city, Vienna Business Agency and the Seestadt Aspern development company. Housing, shopping centres and large retail facilities are not planned. Rezoning procedures could begin from 2029, while plans also include new green space and a transport concept that could involve extending tram line 25. The proposed development is expected to continue until 2045 and beyond.
