The Andau Bridge has been chosen to represent Burgenland in ORF’s “9 Places, 9 Treasures” contest after receiving the most votes in the state’s poll, ORF reported.
It beat the parish church in Mariasdorf and Oggauer Seeberg to become Burgenland’s finalist. The national winner will be chosen by the public during a live show on ORF 2 on October 26. Barbara Karlich and Armin Assinger will host the programme, which is being held for the 13th time.
The finalists will be promoted by a public figure and a presenter from their respective regional studios. Burgenland’s representatives are award-winning chef Max Stiegl and Patricia Schuller.
The bridge crosses the Einserkanal, a canal. In 1956, tens of thousands of people from Hungary used it as a route to freedom. Although the bridge is technically on Hungarian territory, it has been known as the Andau Bridge since then.
Last year’s contest was won by the Mariazellerbahn.
