Small cattle shows across the Appenzell region have become important social gatherings as well as agricultural events, SRF reports.
The animals remain central, and awards are still among the highlights. But what were once primarily competitions are now also occasions for farmers, local residents, clubs and visitors to meet. Many people return year after year for the conversations and sense of community.
Dozens of volunteers help organise the shows, which bring together people who may otherwise see one another only briefly. The events also connect village life with agriculture and give farming families a chance to show their ties to the sector across generations.
Organisers are finding it harder to attract enough participants. The younger generation will be particularly important to the future of many village shows.
